On February 4, 2024, the 122nd Ohio Army National Guard Band witnessed a significant moment as they bid farewell to one outstanding leader and welcomed another. In this celebratory Change of Responsibility ceremony, they saw the passing of the torch from 1SG Andrew Sundman to 1SG Marc Huber.
Rooted in centuries-old Army customs, the ceremony contains the symbolic passing of the unit's guidon flag, signifying the transfer of command responsibility from outgoing First Sergeant, 1SG Sundman to incoming First Sergeant, 1SG Huber. Guided by the hands of the unit’s leaders, including Commander of Troops, SFC Streem, and Commander, CW2 Emily Bauer, the exchange represented the unit's commitment to its mission and its soldiers under new leadership.
1SG Sundman will continue to serve in the Ohio Army National Guard as a senior enlisted leader in the 73rd Troop Command. His almost 20 years in the 122nd Army Band were mainly spent playing the trombone in the back row. In 2020, SFC Sundman became 1SG Sundman and helped lead the band through the uncertainty of the pandemic and our first-ever online Annual Training.
Not only did this event mark the transition in leadership, but it also saw Marc Huber's well-deserved promotion to First Sergeant; we're excited to see him take on this new role. 1SG Huber first joined the Ohio Army National Guard at the age of 17 as an enlisted member of Delta Company, 148th Infantry Regiment. In 1999 he joined the 122nd Army Band as a saxophonist and has been a performer and leader within the group ever since.
1SG Huber notably played a vital role in integrating "music performance teams" within the 122nd Army Band, helping musicians maximize their contributions and move the band towards innovative new endeavors. In addition to his military responsibilities, 1SG Huber is a father, husband, SCUBA diver, skier, and an active member of his community.
As we move forward under new leadership, we carry the legacy of those who have come before us. Their dedication inspires us to continue striving for excellence in all that we do. Here's to a bright future for the 122nd Ohio Army National Guard Band!
